After a full *day* of troubleshooting the cryptic "error 41 in finder" messages (that only came up every other boot or so? For a system that's supposed to be the pinnacle of user-friendliness, numeric error codes are a horrible idea. This is probably a hold-over from when the OS had to fit in a few kilobytes.

Most VMS software use license packs, which are not simply cryptic strings of printable characters. They are structured in format and operated on with a standard tool (LMF). While internally Unix returns numeric error codes I have never seen a program that returned them in that format to the user.

cryptic as the older error numbers are, this site doesn't do any better than anybody else as far as really explaining them. But it's a good resource for looking some up. I think you may be able to reduce those errors by allocating more memory to the programs in question -- and, as always, keep your disk properly
